Who are the FCSA and Professional Passport?
The government does not regulate the umbrella company marketplace as things stand. However, the government recently launched a Call for Evidence which encourage stakeholder participation – on the back of numerous claims that some umbrella companies were acting unethically. For example, there were accusations made against an umbrella company for retaining accrued Holiday Pay, and unethical umbrella companies that facilitate tax avoidance have been found to be preying on vulnerable contractors and freelancers. It’s highly expected that the government will roll out stricter rules and regulations in the umbrella company marketplace. However, while the sector is currently not under government restrictions, the FCSA and Professional Passport, two independent professional bodies, are doing an excellent job protecting temporary workers’ welfare.
For an umbrella company to obtain accreditation from either of these bodies – it must undergo a strict series of assessments and audits – with no stones left unturned. Only umbrella companies that can provide they are fully compliant with HMRC and have their employees’ best interests at heart will be rewarded with accreditation, and take it from us; these accreditations mean a great deal to umbrella companies throughout the UK.
