IT contractors are on the move! At least that’s the view of the largest IT recruitment agency, SThree.
They say that the continued demand is not attributable to an increase in IT budgets, rather to technical staff moving jobs. This suggests that there has not really been any growth in the IT sector.
Richard Holway from TechMarketView says that this confirms his feeling that 2010 was going to be another stagnant year for the IT sector.
SThree has seen their contractor business drop by nearly a quarter in the last 6 months due to contracts not being extended. Only 7% of the group’s contracts were for the public sector whereas the figure would normally be around 13%.
On the other hand the specialist recruiter has reported an increase of 30% in the amount of permanent deals agreed across all their sectors of expertise compared to this time last year.
Meanwhile, contractors are definitely becoming more optimistic about their futures. 81% are confident that they will be able to continue contracting according to a survey commissioned by Simply Contracting, a specialist accountancy firm.
The survey, which was conducted by Shape the Future, also reported that 80% of the respondents are taking a positive outlook about their future prospects in their respective freelance sectors.
