When it comes to umbrella company contractors and permanent workers alike, the most resilient jobs market in the UK is in the Midlands, according to a new jobs report from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation.
The REC, along with professional services provider KPMG, released their most recent Report on Jobs, showing that the Midlands has continued to buck the trend when it comes down to declining demand for interim workers and freelance positions. While the contract position market has undergone a slight contraction lately, demand remains relatively high in several sectors, such as engineering, construction, and IT, according to REC chief executive Kevin Green, who was quick to add that there are more than one million individuals still finding work on a weekly basis in temporary positions.
Contract workers are still highly valued by employers, Mr Green said, as temporary positions are much less demanding on a given firm’s staffing costs due to their flexibility in being able to adapt to the demand levels that exist both today and that are expected to exist in the future as the economy continues to develop. The chief executive also said that the skills most needed in temporary workers – such as IT work, chefs, and drivers – also remain in high demand regardless of the economic realities of the UK and the eurozone.
Industry experts have been watching the economic situation both at home and abroad very carefully. While fears of Greece leaving the eurozone have declined slightly in the wake of the country’s recent election, with credit ratings agency Moody’s downgrading nearly every high street lender in the UK, the country’s economic outlook still remains quite uncertain.
