IT umbrella contractors and freelancers would be advised to learn some new skills if they want to help drive the green IT revolution.
BCS has launched a new intermediate certificate for IT professionals wanting to learn more about energy and cost management in data centres.
Candidates signing up for the course will learn why data centre energy and cost management is important and what it entails. They will learn how to predict and demonstrate the appropriate steps to management as well as comparing and distinguishing between different options.
The intermediate certificate is designed for people in roles such as IT consultants and technicians, architects, data centre managers and CSR professionals.
The director of international and professional development services at BCS, Michiel van der Voort, said the Institute aims to help the IT industry become more energy efficient by giving IT professionals the knowledge and expertise they need to reduce carbon emissions and lower the overall impact IT has on the environment.
Legislation is set to create an increased demand for IT professionals with ‘green’ skills and we are already seeing the emergence of previously unheard of IT roles such as sustainability managers, he concluded.
His views are backed up in a recent study from Ovum which found that an increasing number of companies are adopting energy-efficient technology.
According to Ovum’s research, nearly 75% of CIOs have already implemented some green IT measures in their organisation and a further 8% intend to do so before the end of next year.
One of the analysts at Ovum, Rhonda Ascierto, said this shows that CIOs and other decision makers are changing their attitudes. Previously green IT was seen as an optional extra but it is now thought of as a core technology.
