Contractors who work in science and engineering could find themselves in greater demand according to a report published recently by the CBI.
Results from the report show that the demand for highly skilled workers, such as those who work through umbrella companies, is set to intensify as the UK recovers from the recession.
However, the UK is still suffering from a shortage of these highly skilled workers, with recruiters finding them hard to find. Slightly over half of the employers who took part in the CBI study said they are concerned that they will have problems filling graduate level posts in the coming few years.
Richard Lambert, the director-general of the CBI, said that the government must focus on ensuring enough people have the scientific and mathematical qualifications necessary to match the demand in the engineering and technology sectors. He added that more needs to be done to encourage young people to study science related subjects.
Employers who took part in the research also said that A level subjects such as business studies, chemistry, English, maths or physics or chemistry are best for improving the job prospects of young people. Firms also stressed the importance of studying degree level engineering, maths, science and technology.
Companies also believe that more should be done to advise young people on work experience, vocational training and PAYE apprenticeship programs.
