We’ve had Generation X, Generation Y, and now it seems we’re set for Generation M.
According to research by Jabra, the Bluetooth headset provider, the umbrella company contractor of the future will be part of Generation M, the multi-tasking mobile generation.
Small businesses are probably aware that the traditional 9 to 5 way of working is being phased out in preference for more flexible working practices. Technological advancements have meant that employees can connect with the office remotely via a number of sources.
Andrew Doyle, the MD of Jabra’s office division and contact centre in the UK, explained that the way we work is changing forever thanks to Generation M. Organisations should not force these multi-tasking, mobile office workers to adopt traditional ways of working. Instead, they should provide the tools and support Gen M workers need to have the work life balance they are looking for.
Jabra’s research also discovered that mobile workers want more say when it comes to choosing the devices they use regularly. Currently 46% of office workers use a smartphone or mobile for work, 35% have a laptop and 10% use VoIP as their communication tool.
Nearly 75% of office workers said they responded to emails and took calls outside normal office hours, and more than 50% of workers said they want to do so. However, 20% of employees said their employer had not provided them with the right mobile tools and many have joined the trend to use their own devise for work purposes.
