Dodgy agencies put on notice by REC chief

The chief executive of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation has put dodgy recruiters and agencies on notice, vowing to root them out and expose them.

The REC’s Kevin Green was adamant in his insistence that his industry body will be scouring its ranks to discover any umbrella companies or recruitment agencies that have been playing fast and loose with its rules in an effort to help clean up the freelance contracting sector. Mr Green said earlier last week at the annual awards dinner for the Institute of Recruitment Professionals that there are some quite difficult questions to be answered by companies who may be dipping into less-than legitimate travel subsistence claims or exploiting interim workers.

The REC has a very important choice to make, said the chief executive, who specified that the organisation can either take a proactive approach to inculcating a culture of mature professionalism by embracing robust standards or choose to accept the perception that recruitment firms and umbrella service companies are interested in nothing else than to make a few quid as quickly as possible. Members of the REC will be expected to adhere to the the industry body’s high conduct standards no matter who they are or what number of contractors they manage, added Mr Green, as the REC will not find itself in the camp of those within the freelancing community that advocate turning a blind eye to the actions of a few unscrupulous recruiters.
