The Recruitment and Employment Confederation recently announced that the Summer Games could bring loads of new opportunities for contractors, especially in the capital.
According to a survey undertaken by the REC, 31 per cent of respondents had an expectation that they would hire on additional temporary workers over the course of the next three months, something that could lead to many freelancers or umbrella company contractors having new opportunities for work. With the interim work market experiencing a slowdown due to the economic realities of the moment, this could spell real relief for many temporary workers seeking to make a livelihood, umbrella company experts say.
Agency workers, freelancers, and umbrella contractors have already been integral in preparing London for the Olympics, experts say, citing the massive infrastructure requirements needed to ensure the capital will be ready to handle the massive influx of international competitors that will soon begin flooding into the UK. With evidence that the hard work of these temporary workers will not only be recognised but rewarded in the best possible way – more available work – industry insiders say that knowing that UK firms appreciate the efforts of interim workers is most welcome.
Researchers for the REC also found that an additional 28 per cent of companies surveyed had plans to increase the number of contractors they use not just over the next three months but beyond that. With more than a quarter of survey respondents indicating that the next 12 months could bring higher employment for temporary workers, many see this as an indication that the jobs market may be turning the corner.
