University students needing to pick up some work in between classes and studying may benefit from the high number of contract positions available in the UK.
Contractors, freelancers, and umbrella company workers often tout the flexibility that comes with picking and choosing their own clients, not to mention when and where they conduct their work. This could spell luck for any student looking to balance gaining their qualifications with making money, and industry experts say that the burgeoning number of firms looking for interim workers to help complete projects for them in an inexpensive manner.
However, there are some things that any student looking to make a foray into the freelancing community should know. With today’s students so proficient in social media, the natural inclination is to believe that companies would be knocking on their doors to help manage their own social media and internet presences, but it turns out that paid positions such as these are actually dwindling, with firms instead choosing to have students participate in unpaid internships to manage their social media profiles; combined with the havoc wreaked on the market by search giant Google’s constantly updating algorithms, quality contract positions in social media are becoming a bit thin on the ground.
There may be a silver lining to this cloud, though, as there is evidence that as one facet of online marketing is on the decline, another is increasing to take its place. Recent research has found that email marketing positions are increasing, with one survey discovering a 180 per cent increase for the market.
