When it comes to hiring it’s better to choose a temporary staff member in lieu of a permanent one, according to one economic and employment expert.
One HR consultant recently said that whether you’re a freelancer, a limited company contractor, or an umbrella company worker, you’re more likely to find work in the current economy than someone applying for a permanent position. In fact, with the uncertainty in the eurozone and sluggish economic recovery here at home, the costs of taking on a new permanent long-term employee outweigh the benefits, leading many companies to instead focus their hiring on temporary staff members instead, according to the recruitment expert.
Firms both large and small have no way of knowing what the future holds and what their needs will be, thanks to the current economic climate, said the HR specialist in a recent interview. Many times this will mean that businesses will instead take on contract workers for a short period of time, while keeping an eye on the economy closely in order to determine if the business can afford to take on the contract worker on a more permanent basis if the economic situation improves.
The economics of the day have changed the playing field for nearly everyone, the expert said, adding that it’s rare indeed that someone would stay in one job until being pensioned off decades later. Instead, UK workers have taken on a more mercenary attitude and are much more willing to jump ship if need be.
