Ex-public sector workers are suffering from low self esteem

It will come as no surprise to read that morale in the public sector is low.

Recent research conducted by Badenoch & Clark confirms that 87% of public sector HR professionals think morale is either average or low.

The recruitment company surveyed 1,000 public sector employees and discovered that the cuts are causing HR professionals a number of problems. The main challenge is managing widespread under resourcing and 42.3% said their workload had increased dramatically since the government spending review.

In a bid to boost morale, more than 50% have turned to international communication tools and a further 24.2% have implemented team building exercises.

Meanwhile, many redundant public sector workers have turned to contract and freelance work in order to earn some money. However, it emerges that public sector workers appear to suffer from a lack of self esteem. 62% of ex public sector employees believe this year will be worse than last whilst 75% of people in the private sector think this year will see their fortunes improve.

The managing director of people4business.com says that many people can transition successfully from the public to the private sector. Many freelancers are selling the skills they learned in government to the wider commercial world.

Ex-public sector workers need to face their fears and concentrate on the positive things they have achieved. Compiling a list of achievements and ranking them in order of satisfaction can help people realise which career path they would like to follow.

Once potential career paths have been identified, people can then conduct research into market demand and devise a plan to market their specialist skills.
