“Suitable Opportunity” Say 42% of Bulgarian Self Employed

In the country of Bulgaria there is a self employment boom happening all around the nation. Bulgarians want to work for themselves.

A national newspaper called The Sofia Globe recently took to the streets of Sofia and spoke to the self employed men and women. This is their response…

Apparently 42% of Bulgarian self employed say the main reason why they chose to work for themselves is because it’s a “suitable opportunity.”

Fair enough if you ask me. They see an opportunity and they go for it. And now they are their own boss. Here at Umbrella Companies, we applaud them.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Umbrella Companies has a small following in Bulgaria? Many years ago we were banned in Bulgaria, but now the Iron Curtain has been lifted, then Bulgarians are free to consume whatever ideology they want, and many are choosing UC.

Back to the survey and 23% of those asked said that “continuation of the family business” was the reason they entered self employment.

I’m sure many have taken over the family business and then taken it into the 21st century. And its all thanks to the UC blog, as self employed Bulgarians are now armed with the knowledge to practice the best business practices and make profit.

11% of self employed people in Bulgaria said “flexible work hours” was the main reason they quit their job, while another 11% said “no job found as employee.”

Of course, here in the UK there are always jobs to be found, such as in McDonalds, for example. In Bulgaria jobs may be more difficult to locate, which is why self employment has become a national pastime.

Interestingly, 2% of those asked said “request by former employer” was the reason they chose to become self employed. I’m not sure what that even means? Answers on a postcard, thanks.

The gender battle is in full swing in Bulgaria it seems, with more female self employed VS male self employed. 16% female VS 14% male.

Don’t be fooled into thinking all self employed Bulgarians have it easy though. According to the survey 12% don’t currently have any projects or assignments to work on.

Not only that, but 12% are currently dealing with delayed payments or non payments and 9% have times when they experience financial hardship.

Despite all of this, the future of self employment in Bulgaria looks strong, and with Umbrella Companies by their side I’m sure our Bulgarian friends will continue to go from strength to strength.
