The increased cost of travelling to work will encourage more people to abandon trains and buses and get on their bikes next year, according to reed.co.uk. Train fares are set to rise by up to 13% in the new year.
Commuters say they want to cut their dependence on buses by as much as 67%, on mainline trains by 50% and underground trains by 33%.
A survey conducted by the recruitment company found that over 25% of Britons intend to change the way they get to work in 2011 and 6% intend to change job or move house next year to make commuting easier.
Despite concerns over the environment, a lot of people feel that driving to work alone is going to be their only option. If that were to be the case, there would be more road congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions.
Cycling to work is a healthy option and can work out faster and cheaper than driving. City centre driving, especially at peak times, is painfully slow. Statistics from the Department for Transport show that a car in central London crawls along at an average speed of 9.3 miles per hour during the morning rush hour.
Cyclists, on the other hand, can speed around the Capital at 14 mph, they don’t need to pay a congestion charge fee and they don’t waste time hunting for that elusive parking space.
Are we going to see mass pelotons of cyclists in London? Come on contractors, if Boris Johnson can get on his bike, then so can you!
