Good afternoon. We are putting a steam unit into the main bathroom and the installer has told me that a normal shower door will not work, something about needing the enclosure sealed to the ceiling. I had assumed glass is glass. Now I am trying to work out what actually changes, whether it costs dramatically more, and whether an ordinary glass company can do it or if this is a specialist job. The bathroom is a normal size, nothing enormous, with a nine foot ceiling. We are still at the stage where changing the layout is possible if it makes the glass simpler.

Your installer is right. A steam enclosure has to be closed at the top with a transom panel and usually a vent, otherwise the steam leaves and the unit never reaches temperature, which is an expensive way to own a normal shower.
