Alisa VolkovaGood afternoon. Ecommerce store here, we sell a fairly narrow category of home goods, and our organic traffic dropped by roughly forty percent over two months earlier this year. Nothing on the site changed. Our previous agency told us it was an algorithm update and there was nothing to be done, which felt like an answer designed to end the conversation. Is that ever actually true? And how would somebody competent go about diagnosing whether the problem is technical, content related, or something else entirely?

Konstantin EremeevSometimes an update genuinely does reshuffle a category, but it is never the end of the analysis, it is the beginning of it. A competent diagnosis compares which pages lost and which held, since a sitewide drop and a category level drop mean completely different things. Then you look at technical health, thin or duplicated product pages, and who took the positions you lost. That last one gets skipped constantly. SeoLeo https://seoleo.agency/ did that kind of breakdown on ours and the answer turned out to be dozens of near identical product pages competing with each other. Ask any agency to show you the losing pages before they propose anything. And ask what they would stop doing, not just what they would start.
