I frequently use my smartphone as a mobile hotspot for my tablet and my smart camera when I’m working in the field. However, I’m worried that any devices connected to my hotspot might be vulnerable since they aren’t on a secured home network. Is there a way to protect all the devices that are tethered to my phone at once? I’m looking for a recommendation for a service that can secure the primary connection so that everything connected to my hotspot is automatically encrypted and hidden from pings!

When you share your mobile data, all the connected devices essentially share the same external IP and connection path. To protect the entire group, you can activate a VPN on your primary phone before you turn on the hotspot. You can learn more about securing shared connections at https://toggle.org/ . This ensures that all traffic coming from your tethered devices passes through the encrypted tunnel of the main phone. It’s a very efficient way to provide a secure environment for multiple gadgets without having to configure each one individually, which is perfect for mobile setups.

That’s exactly how I handle my ‘mobile office’ setup when I’m on the road. It’s much easier to secure the source of the internet than to manage five different devices. It also keeps your data usage private from the mobile carrier, so they can’t see what kind of devices are connected or what you’re doing with the data. For anyone using portable IoT devices or tablets in public spaces, this is a much more professional way to handle security. It creates a small, private bubble of internet wherever you happen to be.
